ROAD TO 2010

A VISUAL JOURNEY OF SOUTH AFRICA'S PREPARATIONS
FOR THE 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP™

COFFEE TABLE BOOK

BACKGROUND

While Germany was still awash in a sea of red, yellow and black, a nation temporarily at peace with itself thanks to the extraordinary successes of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, we began documenting South Africa’s preparations for the next edition of the quadrennial showpiece of international soccer. On May 15, 2004, South Africa won the three–way contest to be the first nation in Africa to host the world’s biggest single–code sporting event. An emotional Nelson Mandela, who attended the ceremony in Zurich, reportedly said: ‘I can see my grave now’. At his inauguration as the country’s first democratically elected President in 1994, Mandela had stressed his determination ’to create a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world’. It was these ideals, which helped secure the rights to host the tournament in the first place. Over the past few years, we have captured much of the spectacular journey that thousands of construction workers, administrators and other key 2010 role–players embarked on to prepare the country for this mega–sporting event. Under the cranes that towered over the stadiums and other 2010–related construction projects, there were tales of heartbreak, joy and euphoria. Despite the formidable challenges this country has faced, millions of people around the world are now lauding its achievements.
