Politicians praise SA’s WC success – 19/08/2010
Political parties across the spectrum have echoed President Jacob Zuma’s praise for South Africans, attributing the success of the 2010 World Cup to their patriotic spirit and passion. During a joint sitting of Parliament to debate the successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup, the people of South Africa emerged as the true stars of the tournament and were lauded for their contribution by the President and political parties. DA leader and Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille said the single greatest achievement of the World Cup was the way it had changed stereotypes.

SAPS to keep up security after WC: Cele - 14/07/2010
The police will keep up security in the country after the Soccer World Cup, national police Commissioner Bheki Cele said in Johannesburg on Wednesday. While policing could not be sustained at the level it had been during the tournament, the police would maintain efforts to keep the country safe, he said at Primedia’s Star of the Stars award, that Cele and Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula accepted on behalf of the whole Saps.

Durban to become premier sporting destination – 27/05/2010sporting
Durban’s dramatic makeover in recent years was always intended to go beyond the 2010 World Cup, said eThekwini Municipality’s Strategic Project Unit Head, Julie-May Ellingson. In a presentation at the African Renaissance Conference currently taking place in the city, Ellingson told delegates that revamping the city centre was aimed at making Durban a premier sports destination in Africa. ’We wanted to change the face of Durban. And we managed to do that. It is important to constantly be innovative,’ Ellingson said.

2010 WC carbon footprint targeted – 27/05/2010
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced today that they will be major players at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with projects to reduce carbon emissions as part of a National Greening Programme. At the World Cup, GEF has provided US$1million to help retrofit solar panels on public street lights, traffic lights and billboards around the stadia in the six cities hosting the games.

SA Government announces road safety roadshow – 26/05/2010
North West MEC has embarked on a road safety awareness roadshow in preparation of the World Cup matches to be hosted at Royal Bafokeng Stadium. The objective of the three weeks long roadshow is to raise road safety awareness with a view to reducing road accidents around the Rustenburg Host City, Bojanala Platinum District and throughout the province during the World Cup. Topics covered by the provincial initiative that is into its second week include don’t drink and drive, fatigue, safety belts and stray animals, pedestrian and passenger safety.

Major boost for WC transport plans – 20/05/2010
The transport plans for the 2010 World Cup have received a major boost with the arrival of the new Volvo buses in the city. The buses will be handed over to the taxi industry to operate during the World cup. Hailed as safe, user friendly and reliable, the articulated uses are 18 metres in length, can accommodate 115 passengers, have a Euro4 rating, have a low floor with four doors on the right and two doors on the left, space for two wheel chairs as well electronic and passenger information system.

Global Icons and Cool Britannia team up - 10/05/2010
Global Icons of Cape Town and Cool Britannia, the UK-based international events company with a decade of experience in organizing events for the travelling football faithful, will be working together to turn the Cape Town International Convention Centre into Africa’s biggest football party during the World Cup. King Shaka passes with flying colours – 18/04/2010
The newly constructed King Shaka International Airport in Durban came out with flying colours during a trial exercise last week. The mass trial at the airport in La Mercy involved the participation of an estimated 800 ’fake passengers’ and 300 staff members as part of the last leg of rigorous checks to ensure its preparedness ahead of its big day on 1 May, when it becomes operational. The trial sees the culmination of the Operational Readiness and Transfer Program and it shows that King Shaka International Airport is now 100% functional ahead of its official opening and of the 2010 World Cup.

A-Aggreko announced as final national supporter - 13/04/2010
The final National Supporter of the 2010 FIFA World CupTM has been revealed as Shanduka-Aggreko. Shanduka, a leading African investment holding company, through its subsidiary Shanduka Energy, and Aggreko, the global leader in the provision of temporary power rental services, have formed a joint-venture which is the official supplier of rental power for broadcasting of the FIFA World CupTM tournament. Mossel Bay keeps rates low during World Cup - 23/02/2010
Mossel Bay’s accommodation providers and tourism product owners are planning to attract both South Africans and foreign visitors this winter by charging their normal low season rates during the course of the 2010 World Cup. ’As a result of the media focus on accommodation and transport prices and possible price gouging during the World Cup, we asked our members to mail us their World Cup period rates - and none of those who responded will be charging anything more than they would during the rest of our low season, which stretches from just after Easter until well into September,’ said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm.

Calling all homeowners - 11/02/2010

2010 WC will benefit all – 10/02/2010
At the finals of a national youth debating competition, winner Charlotte Le Fleur of Worcester Secondary School in the Western Cape expressed strong views that the 2010 World Cup would ’not disappoint’ and would benefit the majority of South Africans by creating thousands of jobs and generating billions of rands. Conducted among 266 learners nationally, the State of the Nation Address National Schools Debate competition was organised by Sanlam and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). It aimed to access the youth’s views on issues of national importance and to foster a culture of debate among young South Africans.

Schools ’Football World Cup’ kicks off - 04/02/2010
With the 2010 Football World Cup a mere four months away, the country’s preparations for the international event have entered an exciting and festive phase. Alongside the frenetic activity across the nation to put all the final touches in place for the massive soccer frenetic, school children country-wide have started their own football world cup tournament that is modeled on the Fifa event. In KwaZulu-Natal, the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation has partnered with the Department of Education, the Ethekwini Municipality and SAFA to stage the KZN 2010 Provincial Football Festival, which is scheduled to take place this month from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 in Durban.

Parreira visits European Clubs - 03/02/2010
Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Parreira is in Europe to engage coaches for a possible release of players for the upcoming World Cup Preparation camps in Brazil and Germany respectively. The coach, accompanied by Bafana Bafana physical trainer Francisco Gonzalez and team manager Sipho Nkumane, left on Tuesday, 02 February. The Brazil camp will kick off in March after the completion of the Premier Soccer League fixtures, with the German camp scheduled for April. Bafana Bafana will round-off their World Cup preparations at their base camp at Esselen Park in Johannesburg.

2010 fever hits Soweto - 13/12/1009
The build up to next years 2010 World Cup was given a major boost asthousands of people turned up for the Gauteng 2010 Family Fun Day event in Kliptown, Soweto. SAFA referees appointed for Angola AFCON โ€“ 10/12/2009
Three South African referees have been appointed to officiate at the 2010 African Cup of Nations tournament in Angola. Jerome Damon, Daniel Bennett and Enoch Molefe (assistant referee) will be flying South Africa’s flag high at the African soccer showpiece that runs from 10 โ€“ 31 January 2010. Damon and Molefe are also on the shortlist for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Long Street transformed into Final Draw festival zone – 02/12/2009
Over 15 000 revellers are expected to gather in Upper Long Street this Friday, December 4 for a Final Draw festival hosted by the City of Cape Town. ’The Cape Town Final Draw Festival in Long Street offers the public the opportunity to experience the Final Draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC),’ says Pieter Cronj้, the City of Cape Town’s Director of Communication and 2010 World Cup Spokesperson. Long Street set to become festival zone for draw – 26/11/2009
The entire Upper Long Street, from Wale Street to Buitensingel, is to be converted into a festival zone for the Final Draw of the 2010 World Cup on Friday, December 4. The Final Draw, which will take place in front of some 3 000 international guests at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) will be broadcast live to an estimated audience of 150 million viewers in 200 countries. According to Pieter Cronj้, the City of Cape Town’s Director of Communication and 2010 Spokesperson, the Long Street festival area will have video links to the CTICC’s Red Carpet Welcome Event so that Capetonians can experience the excitement of the event on large video screens in the party heart of the Cape Town CBD.

Table Mountain lights up for final draw – 26/11/2009
On December 4, one of the world’s largest television audiences will focus on Cape Town for the Final Draw of the 2010 World Cup. To celebrate the event, the City of Cape Town has arranged to keep the lights at Table Mountain switched on until midnight on that Friday night, as well as on Sunday, November 29. ’As one of the world’s most famous landmarks, Table Mountain, is bound to feature prominently in every newscast which will be beamed from Cape Town to some 200 countries,’ says Pieter Cronj้, the City’s Director of Communications and 2010 World Cup spokesperson. According to Director of Electricity Services, Dr Leslie Rencontre, the City will be purchasing green energy to illuminate the mountain during this festive season peak period.

Mayor launches ’Quality Open Space’ project - 11/11/2009
The City of Cape Town has officially launched the ’Quality Open Space’ project in Bellville South. The project links the 2010 World Cup to local improvement initiatives. Equally important is the need to extend the existing City programme of providing public open spaces where people can gather and socialise. The focus of this project is the creation of a lasting legacy by establishing neighbourhood public places.
