Campo Grande is the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul State (www.ms.gov.br). Campo Grande has several unique features and was praised by both media and the inspectors of FIFA, but the candidate venue is still under pressure and could be eliminated from the final 12 for political reasons.

SA Peace Conference is cancelled - 24/03/2009
The conveners of the South Africa Peace Conference have decided to postpone the conference that was to have been held at the Constitution Hill on Friday 27 March 2009 as a result of the controversy surrounding the participation of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Every care was taken by the conveners in ensuring a timeous and careful following of a process of invitations, confirmations and logistical arrangements involving all stakeholders. The conference guidelines to the participants clearly stipulated that the only purpose of their visit to South Africa would be for the purposes of participation in the conference and not any other public engagements as these could take away from the purpose for which the conference was intended. From the conceptualisation through the planning and invitation right up to the logistical protocol phase the conveners ensured the relevant state organs were fully briefed and involved.

DA shocked by alleged decision to block Dalai Lama’s visit - 22/03/2009
The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes with shock and disbelief reports that the South African government is in the process of preventing a planned visit to this country by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. With South Africa having just concluded its Human Rights Day celebrations, it beggars belief that our government would go out of it way to block the Dalai Lama - an apostle of peace, who is revered throughout the world for his unwavering commitment to non-violence, human rights and cultural freedom – from entering the country. Even more appalling is the fact that the government has allegedly taken this decision when the Dalai Lama is due to travel to the country at the invitation of fellow Nobel Peace Laureates, former-President Nelson Mandela, and Archbishop Emeritus, Desmond Tutu, in order to attend a 2010 World Cup-related Peace Conference.
