| LOC sells 2010 as an African showpiece - 28/03/2008 |
The 2010 LOC finally arrived in Botswana, after months of uncertainty as to whether they would ever undertake such a trip. Tim Modise, who is the Chief -Marketing and Communications officer, was in Botswana last week together with fellow officers from the LOC and officials from the North West Province to sell the African Legacy concept to the local sporting and business fraternity. He said the 2010 World Cup should be a catalyst for greater things to come not only in South Africa and the region but Africa as a whole. Modise said their government has invested heavily in bringing the world football spectacle to the continent, and a budget of R30bn has been set-aside for that.

| Cheap TV rights for Africa - 28/03/2008 |
South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC), the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) and the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) will be working together to bring the World Cup to the audiences. SABC Head of International Affairs, Phil Molefe said this at a workshop organised to share information between the 2010 LOC and local business and sporting fraternity. Molefe said they mandated SABC, SABA and AUB to establish a consortium to secure broadcasting rights for African countries at reasonable prizes looking at the economical situation of different countries in the continent. He said they are going to implement this on the basis of the Africa Legacy project, which is intended at seeing Africa as whole benefit from the hosting of the biggest sporting event by South Africa.

| Radebe addresses transport concerns - 28/03/2008 |
The use of public transport in Gauteng must be intensified to reduce traffic congestion, sustained integration and economic growth. This came out at the three day Public Transport Marketing and Communication seminar that ran in Boksburg. Addressing the delegates, Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe said public transport should be reasonably accessible at least within one to two and five kilometres in urban and rural areas respectively. Radebe made an assurance that all the initiatives that government was embarking on would leave a lasting legacy and improve the public transport infrastructure after the 2010 World Cup. ’Government has allocated more than R9.2bn from the Public Transport Infrastructure and System Grant for 2010 interventions with most of the funds supporting the host cities,’ he said.

Gauteng MEC for Local Government Qedani Mahlangu says government is committed in improving delivery of water and sanitation, and seeking ways in which water can contribute to growth and development in the country. Speaking at the National Water Summit, Mahlangu said it was critical to deliver quality of water especially as the country prepare for the 2010 World Cup. ’One of the prerequisite for the hosting cities is to have good quality water. We consider ourselves lucky in South Africa because we already have good quality drinking water,’ said Mahlangu.

The board of Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU), the tourism destination marketing organisation for Cape Town and the Western Cape, has announced the appointment of Calvyn Gilfellan as its new Chief Executive Officer. He had been acting in the position since March 2007. In his new role, Gilfellan will be leading CTRU with a team of seasoned travel marketing specialists in building the profile of Cape Town and the Western Cape as a tourist destination of choice. The board announced the appointments of Itumeleng Pooe and David Frandsen as executive managers. Operation Green Point, a joint exercise between the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other agencies and government departments such as the Civil Aviation Authority and the Air Traffic and Navigation Services of the Department of Transport, will take place around Green Point Stadium in Cape Town between 13 and 19 March 2008. During this exercise aimed at honing our skills in securing the aviation sector during major events, some of the most elite and well-trained members within the security forces will simulate various scenarios and enact certain aspects of our emergency contingency plans in order to neutralise any form of aerial threat.

| Lesotho to play qualifiers in SA - 07/03/2008 |
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of SAFA has resolved to further strengthen ties with neighbours Lesotho. The move came in the wake of a request from the Lesotho Football Association to play their 2010 AFCON/ World Cup qualifying home matches in South Africa. In a meeting held at SAFA House in Johannesburg, the NEC agreed to work closely with the Football governing body of Lesotho in ensuring that all three matches to be played on South African soil are a success, in terms of logistics and regulations of CAF and FIFA. Lesotho’s three home matches will be played at the Seisa Ramabodu stadium in Bloemfontein; they will take on Ghana on 7-8June, followed by Libya on 14-15 June and finally Gabon on the weekend of 6-7 September.

| Calls to improve water quality - 04/03/2008 |

The South Americans will travell to South Africa for the March 26 Friendly Match at a venue to be announced soon. According to the CE of SAFA, Raymond Hack, the Association is pressing ahead with its commitment to secure quality opponents for Bafana Bafana as they prepare for the 2010 World Cup. ’ We are delighted to present a talented and exciting team like Paraguay to the people of South Africa. The South Americans will provide a tough test for our boys to match what we experienced at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana,’ said Hack. | Business tourism sector in Joburg - 21/02/2008 |
Johannesburg’s attractions will be shown off to the international business tourism sector during the Meetings Africa Business Tourism conference later this month. South African Tourism is hosting the three-day event, which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 26 to 28 February. Spencer Pillai, acting CE of the Johannesburg Tourism Company , said that he was confident Joburg would be ready for the 2010 WC. Over and above the tourism opportunities and infrastructural gains expected from hosting the football spectacle, the City had also identified various legacy programmes that would benefit communities long after the tournament was over.

| Hundreds of jobs created in airport upgrade - 19/02/2008 |
To date, more than 300 people have been employed since the start of the upgrade project at the Bhisho airport last year. These are labourers from villages surrounding the airport and some of them have already received training from the Department of Labour, while others are still going through the same training programme in various fields of construction, including fencing, painting and etc. The creation of these employment opportunities is in line with the Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport’s policy of ensuring that all projects are implemented according to the Expanded Public Works Programme principles, which promote poverty alleviation, employment creation, training and skills development. Bhisho Airport has been earmarked for international flights during the 2010 WC.

The first stops of the Fifa/2010 LOC inspection tour to Ellis Park in Johannesburg and Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane were successfully completed, as the LOC and Fifa’s focus shifts squarely to the Confederations Cup 2009. The first Fifa event on SA soil, the 2010 WC Preliminary Draw in Durban in November, was acknowledged by Fifa as a ’resounding success’ which showcased SA’s capability as 2010 hosts. Now, the LOC is looking to build on that success and has begun preparing - together with Fifa – in earnest for the Confederations Cup 2009.

| Attitudes of supporters to the 2010 WC - 17/02/2008 |
TNS Research Surveys conducted a study in late 2007 amongst a representative sample of 1 501 SA metropolitan adults (aged 18 years and older) who are soccer supporters, to determine their attitudes to the 2010 World Cup. A preliminary study amongst 2 000 adults in metropolitan areas showed that 63% - or about 6.9m people – consider themselves to be soccer supporters in that they keep track of the sport or teams and results by watching television, listening to radio, attending matches or reading results in newspapers, magazines or online, at least once in the past 6 months. Whilst supporters skew towards younger black males, these are substantial proportions of supporters in all demographics in SA. The second study was specifically amongst such soccer supporters and asked about a number of aspects to do with the World Cup as well as more general aspects regarding the game of soccer.

| Zebras prepare for 2010 - 14/02/2008 |
The senior national team of Botswana, the Zebras, will need all the support it can get to prepare properly for the qualifiers of the 2010 WC. This includes sourcing funds for the team to engage in international friendly games, which will help them be in a good shape once the qualifiers start. Zebras will kick-start their preparations in earnest on the weekend of May 31, against Madagascar, before they face Mozambique and Ivory Coast twice in three subsequent weekends . Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Phillip Makgalemele, said that the team needed to play as many away international friendly games as possible. ’We have in the past struggled in away games while doing well at home and we need to play more away games,’ he said.

Gauteng MEC for Arts, Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy says the Vodacom Challenge competition has wider socio-economic spin-offs for the province. ’In 2007 Vodacom Challenge employed 400 security staff and engaged 60 volunteers and volunteers are expected to increase to 200 this year,’ said Creecy. She noted that each event such as the Vodacom Challenge represented a step towards the momentous event, the 2010 WC. ’By being effectively managed, these events build confidence and sow the seeds for sustainable outcomes well beyond the year 2010,’ said Creecy.

MP, Botsalo Ntuane, has described the recently unveiled Botswana brand as disappointing. ’The brand is unappealing, unattractive, uninspiring and it wont be able to accomplish its intended objectives,’ he said. He said Botswanas brand should be simple, not abstract. Ntuane said the Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority has done what it could done under the circumstances but should however improve its performance. The legislator also warned against misleading Botswana into believing that they would benefit from the 2010 WC. He said SA is the biggest economy in Africa and thus has the capacity to host the tournament of this magnitude.

As part of plans to boost the country’s skills base in various sectors, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will open a chef’s academy in Pretoria. The Compass Group Chef Academy will have an initial intake of 36 learners, which will be trained by the Compass Group, a leading food service company. Led by Mlambo-Ngcuka, government’s Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for SA (AsgiSA) is mandated to pave the way for GDP growth rates of 6% by 2010. Ahead of the 2010 WC, SA is expected to have opened up about 80 000 job opportunities in the local tourism and hospitality sector.

Jacob Zuma, the President of South Africa’s governing political party, the ANC, met Fifa President Joseph Blatter. Zuma, staying in Zurich for professional reasons, took the opportunity to pay a courtesy visit to world football’s governing body. The talks between Blatter and Zuma were centred on the 2010 World Cup and the ongoing preparations for Fifa’s flagship competition. A R150m upgrade to the N2/Settlers Freeway is to increase the capacity for public and general transport at the Hospital Bend vicinity next to the Groote Schuur Hospital. ’This will enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion, this transformation will be achieved by adding lanes and providing pre-selection opportunities for users to eliminate most of the current weaving by traffic,’ said City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Councillor Elizabeth Thompson.
