Appointments

Caseletti to head LOC marketing - 25/08/2006
Emy Casaletti has been appointed as the Marketing Manager for the 2010 LOC and takes up her post on 1 September. Caseletti started her career in a family clothing business called Robe di Kappa. She took charge of this brand-name in 1983 and grew it into a household name at a time when sanctions on SA impeded Kappa SA from enjoying the exposure generated by Kappa International sponsorships. Kick Off reports that Kappa grew into a household brand and she signed partnerships with Mamelodi Sundowns F.C in 1985, Kaizer Chiefs in 1988, Bafana Bafana in their first ever sponsorship in 1991 as well as the Natal Sharks and many individual athletes.

Another Blatter for world football - 06/08/2006
With little fanfare, a nephew of the powerful president of soccer’s international governing body, Fifa, took the helm this summer of a media company that trades in the sports group’s valuable broadcasting rights. The International Herald Tribune reports that in the days after the World Cup ended last month, Philippe Blatter took over as CE of Infront Sports & Media, which presided over global sales rights for the 2006 World Cup - an event watched live by 5.9bn viewers around the world.

Arrows coach targeted for 2010 technical set-up - 04/08/2006
Lamontville Golden Arrows coach Khabo Zondo is now officially a candidate for Bafana Bafana’s 2010 technical set-up, but the Durban club are not about to part company with leading striker Alton Meiring as well. The Daily News reports that Zondo, who is understandably chuffed at being in the reckoning for a place alongside new Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira for the forthcoming World Cup on home soil, has disclosed he will be meeting with Safa ce Raymond Hack in coming days to discuss the exact nature of the assistant coach position.

WC Executive Director appointed - 31/07/2006
Sibongile Mazibuko is used to stress. She had better be, because she is in charge of making sure Johannesburg is ready and able to host the World Cup in four years’ time. According to a Mail & Guardian Online report, forty-three-year-old Mazibuko, previously the city’s chief operations officer, has been appointed executive director for the World Cup, and describes time as the biggest obstacle facing the city.

Australian to head 2010 operations - 27/07/2006
A little-known Tasmanian has emerged as the most powerful Australian in world football as the build-up to SA’s WC finals in 2010 begins. The Courier Mail reports that "Michael Palmer has been headhunted by the game’s global governing body, Fifa, to head its 2010 World Cup effort from its office in the host nation in Johannesburg. Fifa appointed him to the high-calibre role last July but he kept a low profile until fronting the media during Germany’s World Cup to reject a South African report published in an Afrikaans paper."

Scotsman appointed new consul general for 2010 WC - 05/05/2006
He is a member of the unlikeliest team - a Scot charged with helping bring about success at the WC. But later this month, a native of North Lanarkshire will fly out to begin a new life in SA and assist in the countrys efforts as host nation of the 2010 tournament. The Herald reports that "Brian Gallagher has been chosen by the British High Commission as its new consul general. Based in Johannesburg, his main role is to secure bilateral investment, and he hopes to attract Scottish and British firms in the run-up to the event."

New communications manager for SA 2010 LOC appointed - 02/05/2006
African. World class. No distinction. Those are the words Fifa 2010 WC CE Danny Jordaan uses often when he envisages what the tournament in SA will be like in four years time. The Cape Times reports that "they are also words which quite fittingly describe the new communications manager for the SA 2010 LOC, Tumi Makgabo."
