Visa new official financial service partner of Fifa - 05/04/2006
Visa and Fifa will sign a sponsorship agreement worth $150m to $200m. Chron.com reports that "Visa will be introduced as Fifas new financial services partner at the soccer bodys headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Visa will become the fifth company to join Fifas top tier of sponsors for the 2007-14 period, joining Coca-Cola, Adidas, Sony and Hyundai. A sixth sponsor is expected to be announced at a later date."

Keep your distance warns Fifa - 31/03/2006
Direct sponsorship of the 2010 WC finals will be confined to just six sponsors . But that will not preclude some SA companies from having a direct association with the event. Financial Mail reports that "Fifa is now offering three separate tiers for interested partners. Fifa partners are limited to six and have rights across all the Fifa competitions for the period 2007-2014."

WC LOC requests meeting with Zille - 29/03/2006
The Fifa LOC for the 2010 WC has asked for a meeting with Cape Town mayor Helen Zille to defuse the controversy over Green Point stadium, said LOC chairman Irvin Khoza. According to a report on the News24 site, "he said Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool had also been invited to the meeting, which it was hoped would take place in Cape Town, ahead of an LOC board meeting. The move follows Zilles decision this week to put planning for the R1.5bn stadium project on hold pending a report on the full financial implications for the city."

Green Point stadium too far from the football masses - 22/03/2006
Marten Fontein, the new boss of Dutch soccer giants Ajax Amsterdam, says Fifa has made a profound blunder by endorsing Green Point as Cape Towns match venue for the 2010 World Cup. The Cape Argus reports that "Fontein and Martin van Geel, the clubs technical director, were in town for five days to run the rule over feeder club Ajax Cape Town. Fontein, a former cricketer who toured SA with the Dutch national team in 1980, argued that the proposed super stadium would not have the desired effect on the local game as it was based in an elite white area and too far from the football masses."

Fraudsters use WC branding without licence - 13/03/2006
The lucrative nature of the Fifa 2010 WC has already resulted in more than 700 infringe-ments of copyright, with fraudsters using the branding without licence. The Mercury reports that "this information was brought to attention by eThekwini Municipal Manager Michael Sutcliffe, who attended a 2010 workshop where he was informed of infringements of the 2010 brand."

World Cup photos will be available online - 13/03/2006
Fifa has agreed not to restrict the media from online publication of WC photographs during the football tournament in Germany later this year. According to a Mail & Guardian Online report, "Fifa and the World Association of Newspapers said they have reached an accord to allow media photos to be used on the Internet immediately."

Jordaan welcomes Fifas decision to take charge of 2010 ticket sales - 07/03/2006
Rather than joining in any mounting alarm - with some SA soccer officials voicing immediate concern - LOC CE Danny Jordaan said that he welcomed Fifas decision to take charge of ticket sales for the 2010 World Cup. The Pretoria News reports that "it would make for a smoother, overall organisation of the tournament in SA."

Fifa to handle ticketing for 2010 - 05/03/2006
Fifa president Sepp Blatter says his organization should take over ticketing arrangements for the 2010 WC in SA. According to a report on the News24 site, "Blatter said in an interview it would have been better if soccers world governing body had organized ticket sales for the 2006 World Cup, rather than host country Germany, after criticizing strict German controls."

2010 will not be a free-for-all - 24/02/2006
It became clear at a 2010 WC seminar that SA is merely a contractor and Fifa the owner of the event. Moneyweb reports that "Jerome Valcke, Fifa marketing and television head, told delegates that the event would not be a free-for-all. He warned that no brand will be able to piggyback on the major sponsors and partners of the event. The rights have almost all been sold to multinationals, Coca Cola, Adidas, Hyundai, Emirates and Sony."

Preparations are on track for 2010 - Blatter - 23/11/2005
Fifa President Sepp Blatter gave SAs preparations for the 2010 WC his backing and dismissed concerns about public transport problems. The Mercury reports that "Blatter said that he was sure that the SA World Cup in 2010 would be a milestone not only for the country, for Africa, but the world."

Fifa and Coca-Cola sign a sponsorship deal worth R3.3bn - 22/11/2005
Fifa and Coca-Cola signed a 16 year sponsorship deal estimated at $500m (about R3.3bn) in Cape Town. According to a report on the News24 site, "Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced that the Coca-Cola sponsorship will commence from 2007 including the 2010 World Cup in SA and will continue through to 2022."

Fifa presidents promise to Africa - 21/11/2005
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has given African nations a guarantee that they will have their top players available to them for the upcoming African Cup of Nations to be held in Egypt in January next year. According toa report on the News24 site, "Blatter stressed the importance of having all of Africas stars at the continental showpiece as it was a Fifa sanctioned tournament and also fell into the Fifa international calendar."

New Safa home revealed - 21/11/2005
SA president Thabo Mbeki and Fifa president Sepp Blatter officially unearthed the new home of SA and African football at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The Cape Times reorts that "Safa House will be the headquarters of the 2010 Fifa World Cup local organising committee and also the temporary home of Fifa during the soccer showpiece which will be held in SA in five years time. The building which is set to cost Fifa between R50m and R70m is to be constructed from the January and should be completed in July of 2006 with all the cost being incurred by Fifa."

Blatter attacks wealthy soccer players and club owners - 12/09/2005
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has launched a scathing attack on hugely wealthy players and club owners, saying the pornographic amounts of money available at the top tiers of football risked wrecking the sport. The Sunday Times reports that "Blatter also lambasted the greed of semi-educated players, promising a Fifa taskforce to curb the sports excesses."
