The Andrew Mandaza interview (05/05/2010)
|
African art has played an important role in the 2010 World Cup. This was acknowledged last weekend at the 2010 School Adventure National Art Finals which were held in Pretoria. Between August 2009 and April 2010, learners from almost 9,000 schools, across all provinces of South Africa submitted various forms of art works. Almost 300 learners and their teachers participated in the finals where the art works were displayed in a colourful exhibition. North of the border, there has also been a great deal of interest in the tournament. Project 2010 spoke to 22-year-old Andrew Mandaza from Harare, Zimbabwe who is turning heads with his collection of 2010 World Cup-related art...
When did you develop an interesting in creating football artwork?
I started seriously drawing football pictures in 2002.
How has the response been to your work?
The response has always been overwhelming from the start. Someone once said to me if Art was football, I could have been Zidane.
Have you had it displayed anywhere?
My works were displayed at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare at the Youspace Section during last year's Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Are you planning to come to South Africa for the tournament?
Yes, indeed I am planning to come - it is going to be an incredible experience for the entire continent.
