The David Maynier interview (24/02/2010)
|
The official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised concerns about security control measures along South Africa's borders during the 2010 World Cup. DA MP David Maynier says there are serious doubts about whether our borders will be properly protected during the World Cup. Project 2010 spoke to Maynier about these, and other, issues...
What is the situation at the moment?
The portfolio committee on defence and military veterans has received a proposal to redeploy the military on our landward borders from 1 April. In terms of this proposal, the defence force will begin deploying approximately 540 soldiers on the South Africa/Zimbabwe and South Africa/Mozambique landward borders and spend approximately R135 million on borderline security during the 2010/2011 Financial Year.
Why should we be worried?
In June 2009, the president said a border management agency would be established and that hasn't happened. Also, the fact that the SANDF is being deployed back to the borders is a step in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go in terms of securing our borders.
But government assures us that it has been working closely with law enforcement agencies from around the world to ensure that our borders will be secure for 2010.
Yes, we have been given these assurances from government and the 2010 Organising Committee but I still think this is a matter we will continue to proble in Parliament. At the end of the day, we have to be very careful not to be alarmist but, at the same time, we need to be very careful about the possible threats we face.
