The Esther Mogotsi interview (13/8/2008)
|
Prominent South African political and leaders and football administrators are in China's capital Beijing to promote the 2010 World Cup. A promotional campaign is being held from August 8 to 24 at South Africa House. Esther Mogotsi, spokesperson for the 2010 World Cup government unit is co-ordinating this crucial 'road-show'. Project 2010 asked her....
Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan said Beijing marks the moment that the international spotlight will shift to South Africa as the hosts of the word's next big sporting event. Is there a sense of excitement among all the ambassadors representing South Africa in Beijing?
Yes, there is a great deal of excitement. The preparations are going well and we have met with IOC who are assisting us with our programme of event.
What events do you have planned to highlight South Africa's 2010 preparations?
There will also be a 2010 Media Face Off on August 20 in the form of an interactive panel discussion between various South African leaders and the international media. Accredited and non accredited media representatives will be given an opportunity to interview Jordaan, Deputy Police Commissioner Andre Pruis and Jabu Moloketi in his capacity as the chairperson of the 2010 Technical
Coordinating Committee. In addition, FIFA Secretary General Jereome Valcke and a representative from MATCH will also be represented.
It's early days, but lessons can you draw from Beijing in terms of the organisation?
Its very well organised. There is state-of-the-art technology and a lot we can learn from for 2010. Also, everything is very well co-ordinated especially in terms of infrastructure and transport. We haven't seen any glitches.
Have you picked up any negativity about some of the problems facing SA, particularly on the crime front?
Not necessarily, but this is one of the reasons we are holding the media forum. We are giving them the opportunity to raise any issues or concerns and we will have the right people to address them. We are saying we have nothing to hide.
