The Lorraine Gerrans interview (27/05/2009)
|
2010 role-players are determined to ensure that the World Cup leaves a green legacy. Host city Cape Town has an environmental action plan that consists of 43 projects with targets, indicators, a budget, a timeline and partners. Project 2010 spoke to the city's 2010 Green Goal manager Lorraine Gerrans...
What are the goals of your programme?
With the help of the 2010 Local Organising Committee and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, we aim to leave a positive environmental legacy. The city has implemented a greening programme that aims to make the event as environmentally friendly as possible. It incorporates sustainable development principles into every aspect of the event. A Green Goal 2010 action plan has been developed, with indicators, milestones and budgets for 43 projects relating to energy, waste, water, transport, hospitality and sustainable lifestyles.
Have you secured any breakthroughs so far?
Yes - a number of projects have already been completed and others are being implemented. One of these is to channel the run-off of water from Table Mountain to the Green Point common (where the 2010 World Cup stadium is being constructed) for irrigation.
Who is supporting you?
We receive backing from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a German political organisiation as well as the Danish group Danida and Sappi.
What lessons can we draw from Beijing?
Our programme is not nearly as elaborate as Beijing, but at the same time we have learned some important lessons from them. For example, we are now sitting back and waiting until there is a media outcry like we saw with their air pollution problem We have been proactive and we started a long time ago …I think the results are already starting to show.
