The Dr Lorraine Platzky interview (03/06/2009)
|
In exactly six months time, Cape Town will be the centre of the universe with the 2010 Final Draw at the International Convention Centre. The event on December 4, will be broadcast live to about 700 milion viewers around the planet. Project 2010 spoke to Dr Lorraine Platzky, the head of the Western Cape's 2010 unit...
How ready are you for the final draw?
We are very much on track. We already have the programme down to the minute. We will be catering for 3 000 VIPS from around the world. Of course, this is a major event for the city and the province and we are determined to show the best of both for the entire planet.
Any other festivities planned?
There will be a major street party in Long Street (in the CBD) for non-VIPS. We will broadcast the ceremony live on big screens and this will be a cultural celebration of the World Cup.
How has the relationship between the city and the province been with regards to 2010 preparations?
We have worked very well - on a technical level. There were a few political wobblies but that was to be expected given the political climate here. But I think everyone has seen the importance of 2010 - that it is a truly global event - and that has helped us all.
What are your biggest concerns at this stage?
Getting everyone on the same page in terms of transportation arrangements.
Are you worried about the Bus Rapid Transit system?
No I'm not worried, but I am disappointed that it won't be completely rolled out by 2010.
