The Sepp Blatter interview
|
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has defended the governing body's decision to throw out the idea of introducing goal-line technology. FIFA - with the support of the Welsh and Northern Irish Football Associations - voted against introducing the goal-line technology ahead of the 2010 World Cup. He addressed this issue in a recent interview with CNN's Pedro Pinto...
Why has video technology not been used by FIFA?
Speaking about the chip in the ball, which is the most accurate and which works - I can say it works. But it is so complicated, not only because the chip of the ball but the chip in the ball will naturally create a lot of problems for all manufactures of balls. I tell you the system of the chip in the ball is a Cairos Adidas system and there are other producers of balls that would have the same right to have access to that and on the same conditions that they have access to the ball on the field of play. This is really a fundamental problem. The second point is the technology that is used because it is based on an immediate report by this chip, but you cannot use radio waves because they are interrupted by any circumstances. So you have to wire the whole field of play and wire the surroundings of the field of play. I think it is too complicated. The Hawkeye? Even the producer of Hawkeye, Mr Hawkins has to admit that even with seven cameras, if the ball is within a bunch of players a camera cannot see the ball then you cannot say if it is in or out.
But the objective of football is to score a goal, whether a goal is scored or not can change the lives of many people and change the fortunes of many clubs?
I agree if we have an absolute, accurate and not complicated system, I will be in favour. But these two systems with all respect to the effort that has been made by both companies, they have to agree it is complicated and not 100% accurate.
In football these days violent tackles, cheating, time wasting. For you what's the biggest problem in the game right now that you would like to see resolved?
Cheating. Because tackles you can see and intervene, the referee is there. Cheating, diving and cheating the referee by pushing the opponent. In the 18 yard box you can see the pushing and grabbing of the shirts. Grabbing the shirt is worse than pulling a leg, not kick but pull a leg. Lying on the field saying 'I am injured' and then the referee is coming, then the doctors and stretchers are coming and then it's like a procession. Then the player is touching the touch line and he is miraculously OK. This is cheating.
