The Thembinkosi Goniwe interview (16/09/09)
|
Government officials, artists, curators, the media, captains of industry, stakeholders and supporters of the African contemporary arts industry on Wednesday attended The Artists of Africa Exhibition. This important Pan African Exhibition has been recognised as an official 2010 World Cup Host City Event for the Johannesburg. Project 2010 spoke to Thembinkosi Goniwe, the head curator of Artists of Africa about the launch.
How did the idea of hosting this event come about?
Having hosted to an array of both local and international high profile events, we wanted to host an event that not only verifies the African continent's status as a world-class host but also offers African artists a well deserving opportunity to showcase their work.
What is unique about this initiative?
The exhibition is a creative and an intellectual space for African artists, curators, writers and various audiences to engage in dialogue on culture, aesthetics, politics and mobility.
What happens after the launch?
The launch will kick start the project and the South African curator's tour into Africa to meet and collaborate with the finest artistic minds of the continent. This will culminate with the exhibition will be open to the public at Museum Africa from the 11 May to the 11 July 2010 - covering the entire World Cup.
And the main aim of the exhibition?
It is aimed at fully aligning the public behind the 2010 World Cup activity. The public will be invited to view the chosen artwork and the exhibition will thus afford everyone an opportunity to not only experience but also be educated through Africa's finest contemporary artwork.
