New twist in SAFA polls - 21/02/2009
SAFA regions are torn right down the middle over the elections that are scheduled to take place in September. And the candidacy of SAFA vice- president Irvin Khoza and 2010 LOC CE Danny Jordaan is not the only bone of contention. City Press reports that there is now a growing feeling that the elections should be postponed and then held only after the World Cup, which is pencilled in for June and July next year. While initially there were a few names touted as likely candidates, including vice-presidents Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, Mubarak Muhamad and national executive committee (NEC) members Kirsten Nematandani and Mandla “Mazibuko, the serious race seems to be down to between Khoza and Jordaan.

LOC to decide fate of 2010 politicos – 25/01/2009
The fate of former ministers on the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee will be decided at the board’s special meeting on Monday. This is according to Safa president Molefi Oliphant, who told City Press that the board would seal the future of Jabu Moleketi, Essop Pahad and Sydney Mufamadi. The three – who served in the finance, presidency and local government ministries respectively – resigned after the recall of former president Thabo Mbeki. Although the government has already replaced them with Sicelo Shiceka, Sue van der Merwe and Lesetja Kganyago, the former ministers might be retained after the Safa national executive committee invoked Article 8.3 of Section 21 of the Companies Act, which allows the board to increase the number of members.

Santana hit by selection problems – 22/01/2009
Bafana head coach Joel Santana hit his first problem in 2009 when he named a 24-man squad to play Zambia in a training match at Atteridgeville’s Super Stadium on Tuesday. According to a report on the News24 site, he named six players who are involved in PSL matches the following night and the players’ clubs have stated that as the international is a training friendly and does not fall on an official FIFA date, they will not release their players. SAFA CE Raymond Hack stressed that his body had a cordial relationship with the PSL and they would be asking them to help and postpone the matches. ’We realise that clubs are not under any obligation to release players as this game does not fall on a FIFA date. But we are looking at the bigger picture with Santana preparing for the Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup so we are hopeful of coming to an amicable solution,’ said Hack.

He was a man of action and that is why Mbombela Municipality has a stadium for 2010 due to his work,’ Khoza said. ’Mahlalela’s death is not only a loss to his family but also to the Mpumalanga Province and football fraternity as a whole.’

The King Protea appears on the right-hand side of Bafana Bafana’s jersey, but that won’t be the case for much longer. According to a report on the News24 site, South African soccer boss Raymond Hack said the Protea appears on the ’wrong side’ because they are only getting their new kit from manufacturers next year. ’The kit is produced in four-year cycles and therefore Bafana will only get their new jerseys next year,’ said Hack. ’The team will receive their new kit in March and use it in the Confederations Cup and World Cup tournaments.’

More millions for SAFA execs - 08/11/2008
SAFAhas awarded a sum of more than R6m to its members as bonuses for securing the 2010 World Cup. This additional windfall was prompted by the outcry that ensued when SAFA president Molefi Oliphant, his deputy Irvin Khoza and 2010 LOC CEO Danny Jordaan were rewarded with R7m each, a total of R21m as bonuses for their roles. In its wisdom, the organisation decided that the other members who served on the National Executive Committee (NEC) and in the SAFA regions deserved a share of the spoils.
According to information in the 2007/08 Safa Annual Report, NEC members who served between 2000 and 2004 will share an amount of R3 846 154, while the Safa regional executives will share R2.5m.

Bafana slammed for poor performance - 29/10/2008
SAFA vice-president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana broke ranks by openly criticising Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola. The Cape Times reports that up to now, that failure to make it to the finals has been dressed up as a blessing in disguise, as it will allow coach Joel Santana more time to prepare his team for the 2010 World Cup on home soil. However, Nonkonyana was remarkably frank in his assessment of the national team at the launch of the Nelson Mandela Challenge against Cameroon on November 19. ’Our dream to conquer Africa before the World Cup has not been fulfilled. We cannot afford a Bafana that behaves like the rand in the market. That is the source of amusement for cartoons,’ he stated. ’We hope that Santana and our national team have now found a winning formula so that we can take our rightful place in Africa and the world.’

Rumblings at 2010 LOC continue - 20/10/2008
All the syrupy platitudes surrounding Tim Modise’s resignation as communications director of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup’s organisation notwithstanding, the goings on of the LOC continued to precipitate grave and widespread concern this week. Modise, a man of considerable talent, but one of many hoisted by the LOC into roles for, which they were unsuited, had long threatened to resign - but was seemingly persuaded not to take the inevitable step because of the detrimental effect it could have on the World Cup. And who can take with more than a pinch of salt Modise’s declaration that he has fulfilled his task with the LOC 21 months before the hosting of the World Cup kicks off - or LOC CE Danny Jordaan’s pious acclaim of what the outgoing director of communications has achieved. According to a column on the IoL site, the scenario resembles something more akin to a chapter out of Ripley’s famed ’Believe it or Not’ than a chronicle of appropriate appointments to handle the awesome task of planning, organising and operating the 2010 World Cup.

Last calls to fine-tune ailing Bafana - 18/09/2008
FIFA president Sepp Blatter warned South African football bosses to get the ailing national soccer team back into shape before SA hosts next year’s Confederations Cup. Business Day reports that speaking on the final day of his four-day visit to SA, Blatter said it was important for a beleaguered team — that failed to even qualify for the 2010 African Nations Cup — to play well enough to remain until the latter stages of the Cup and the World Cup a year later. ’It is high noon for Bafana and they have to start playing well,’ said Blatter. ’We cannot draw them against weak teams in the Confederations Cup (due to get under way from June 14 to 28 next year) or even in the World Cup. We cannot draw them against (weak) teams they would perhaps prefer to play against.’

Santana safe for now - 13/09/2008
In just a matter of days, Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana has managed to turn his toughest job into a more comfortable one. Failure by the Brazilian to qualify the national team for Angola 2010 simply means he will be under no pressure to produce results as he prepares a team for the World Cup. According to a SA Football Association (Safa) programme, which practically immunises Santana from criticism, the Brazilian will have to focus on nothing but the ’bigger picture’. ’It’s a blessing in disguise,’ some reasoned of the failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, and whatever happens on the road to the bigger stage should pale into insignificance.

Barker calls for round table meeting - 12/09/08
SA’s most successful coach Clive Barker has called on the SA Football Association (Safa) to set up a round table meeting with former local born national coaches as a matter of urgency. Barker, who won the 1996 African Nations Cup on home soil, is alarmed by the way Brazilian coach Joel Santana is wrecking the national side. Said a worried Barker on Thursday: ’What Safa must do urgently is get all the local born former Bafana coaches who had success with Bafana, such as myself, Trott Moloto, Shakes Mashaba and Jomo Sono, to a meeting to try and plan a way forward. We are going backwards with Santana. He is way out of his depth.’ Santana has come in for mounting criticism from fans and the media after winning only one of the seven matches in which he has been in charge. Santana was chosen by former Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira after the Brazilian World Cup winner shocked the country by resigning in May owing to his wife’s ill health. ’Why is Santana earning R1.5 million and getting protection from Safa for failing?’
